Chido Obi scores as Man United U21s win at Liverpool to continue perfect PL2 start
Manchester United U21s beat Liverpool U21s 2-1 at the Kirkby Academy on Sunday afternoon to continue their flawless start to the season in the Premier League 2.
The hosts opened the scoring with the game’s first attack. Lucas Pitt combined with Joe Bradshaw, whose shot was parried away by goalkeeper Will Murdock, but Michael Laffey headed the rebound home.
United initially found it difficult to test Armin Pecsi in the Liverpool goal and were restricted to taking long-range shots.
Diego Leon eventually got United’s first shot on target, forcing Pecsi to make a save, and Jack Fletcher struck the chance from the resulting corner wide.
Man United drew level in the 43rd minute after brilliant work from Tyler Fletcher, who set up Chido Obi for the equaliser.
Shea Lacey came close to putting the young Reds ahead before halftime, but could not put his effort into the back of the net.
The first attempt after the interval fell to Man United as Jaydan Kamason’s header from a cross rattled the crossbar.
Jack Fletcher volleyed wide from Lacey’s corner and also fired another attempt off target as United kept pushing to take the lead.
Keyrol Figueroa missed a big chance to put Liverpool ahead, receiving a cross from Trent Kone-Doherty, only for him to strike his shot onto the post.
Pecsi then produced a superb save to deny Lacey, before tipping Obi’s right-footed effort away. However, United finally got the breakthrough in the 80th minute.
Following a good run, Bendito Mantato cut the ball back for Obi, whose effort was saved, but Kamason converted the rebound.
Substitute Victor Musa saw his effort saved by Pecsi, and Dan Armer headed over from the resulting corner before the final whistle was blown.
United sit atop the standings after recording their fourth successive victory of the campaign.
