0 23

Riley Ulin, Benjamin Harp, and Deandre Doss got the running game going as the Redwood High football team scored 34 unanswered points en route to a 34-21 road win at Castro Valley on Friday night.

The Giants (2-2) trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter as Castro Valley (0-4) returned an interception for a touchdown to grab an early lead. Quarterback Tommy Vasquez — Redwood’s third different signal caller so far this season — bounced back with a 59-yard touchdown pass to Will D’Amario-McShane to get the Giants on the board in the second quarter.

Ulin scored on a 6-yard touchdown run as the Giants took a 14-14 tie into the half. Ulin gave Redwood the lead for good at 20-14 with a 32-yard run in the third quarter. Vasquez connected with D’Amario-McShane again for a 10-yard score to make it 27-14 at the end of the third quarter. Doss capped the 34-0 surge with a 22-yard touchdown run to put Redwood in front 34-14 in the fourth quarter.

“Once we had the big touchdown reception, after that everything just got rolling,” Redwood coach Allen Talley said. “We ran the ball very well. … We were able to get the run game going then everything else kind of opened up for us.”

Redwood returns home for it’s Redwood Empire Valley opener against Petaluma next Saturday.

“(Petaluma has) been running the ball good,” Talley said. “They have a couple returners from last year. They do what they do. they do their system and they know how to do it.”

Novato 21, Eureka 20

Sophomore Ben Cleary stepped in at quarterback and Adam Baldassari stepped in at kicker to lead Novato to a comeback win at home against Eureka on Saturday.

Cleary, playing quarterback for the first time due to injuries to Trevor Cleary and CJ Castro — Novato’s other signal callers — completed 15 of 28 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Cleary hit Gio Castaing on a fourth-and-long for a screen pass that Castaing took 37 yards for a score to tie the game at 6-6.

Eureka (1-2) moved ahead 12-6 at the half and led 20-6 in the third quarter. The Hornets (1-2) climbed back into the game on a 7-yard rushing touchdown by Castaing to make it 20-12. Isaias Zalava had an interception to set Novato up with a short field then Cleary ran for a touchdown to make it 20-18. The Hornets went for the two-point conversion but were unsuccessful.

Novato got the ball back midway through the fourth quarter but the drive stalled out in the red zone. Novato’s regular kicker, Castro, is injured but Baldassari convinced coach Joseph Simmons to give him a shot at the winning field goal.

“(Baldassari) said “I played soccer before, I can kick it’,” Simmons said. “He did a couple practice kicks on the sideline into a lacrosse goal then made a 35-yard field goal with about 3 minutes left on the clock.”

Novato’s defense came up with a late stop to seal what Simmons called perhaps the best win during his tenure. The Hornets came into the game ranked 89th in the North Coast Section by MaxPreps.com while Eureka was ranked at No. 55.
