Wilyer Abreu May Be Activated Off IL During Red Sox-Rays Series
Wilyer Abreu to the rescue?
As the Boston Red Sox cling to the final AL wild-card spot heading into their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, Abreu could at last be activated off the injured list.
“Wilyer Abreu is flying to Tampa Bay tomorrow to rejoin the club, with a decision on when to activate him to be made when he joins the Sox at Steinbrenner Field,” Alex Speier of The Boston Globe posted on Bluesky.
“Wilyer Abreu will rejoin the team tomorrow. Cora did not say if he would be activated, but it seems unlikely he would be flown here just to watch,” fellow Boston Globe scribe Peter Abraham wrote on Bluesky.
The 26-year-old outfielder landed on the IL on Aug. 21 due to a calf strain and hasn’t played since Aug. 17.
Abreu has seemingly been close to returning for days, if not weeks, but the team has stayed patient.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said last Saturday that the Gold Glove award winner was expected to be activated this week, but it was unclear if that would come during the recently completed series against the Athletics or vs. the Rays.
If Abreu can return during the set vs. Tampa, it’d be a big boost for Boston.
