50% duels lost: Amorim should now bench £27m United star, he's to blame for 3 goals v Man City
Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils had a difficult derby on the road and were outclassed in the second half.
Luke Shaw had a forgettable outing and had a part to play in each of the goals conceded.
The Englishman was easily dribbled past by Jeremy Doku in the lead-up to the opening goal.
For City’s second, he was outmuscled by Erling Haaland before dinking the ball beyond Altay Bayindir.
Shaw was partly to blame for the third goal too. He played a poor back pass to Harry Maguire.
The centre-back panicked and gifted possession to Bernardo Silva, who put Haaland through on goal.
Shaw has been ever-present in the left centre-back role in the Premier League this term, but manager Ruben Amorim must ponder dropping him to the bench against Chelsea on Saturday.
Aside from his defensive errors, the £27 million signing won just 50 percent of his ground and aerial duels while losing possession on eight occasions. He was also caught out of position at different phases.
Ayden Heaven is the immediate back-up if Amorim wants to utilise a left-footed option, given Lisandro Martinez is not fit yet.
However, the Portuguese could be reluctant to start the inexperienced centre-back in a must-win game.
In our view, the alternative solution should be to play Noussair Mazraoui or Leny Yoro in the role. Both have played in the position in the past and would provide an upgrade on Shaw this weekend.
United have picked up just four points from as many league games this campaign. A draw against the Blues won’t be a bad result, but a defeat could lead to serious questions over Amorim’s future.
