Sidelined Red Sox Veteran Nominated For Prestigious Award
An injured Boston Red Sox player has the opportunity to win a significant honor.
MLB announced each team’s nominee for the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to a player who best represents the sport on and off the field. Boston’s nod went to Liam Hendriks.
It’s the sixth time Hendriks is nominated for the prestigious award. MLB.com noted that the 36-year-old is on pace to donate more than $750,000 to charitable causes this year, focused on aiding cancer research and veterans and their families.
“One of baseball’s most tireless advocates for compassion, community and change, Liam Hendriks is not just a standout player; he is a model of purpose-driven leadership who uses his platform to uplift others, champion critical causes and create lasting impact well beyond the field,” MLB.com’s bio reads.
Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in early 2023, Hendriks returned to the mound for the Red Sox this season. The three-time All-Star was recently shut down with arm tightness while rehabbing from a hip injury and is unlikely to pitch again this season.
Hendriks has participated in MLB’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign, raising awareness by sharing his story. MLB also noted that he and his wife, Kristi, often purchase lunch for Red Sox front office members as a token of appreciation.
“Much like Roberto Clemente, Liam defines greatness not only by performance but by purpose,” MLB wrote. “His impact reaches across cities and seasons, built on years of sustained action and human connection. He reminds us that the true measure of a player lies not in their stats, but in their ability to uplift others.
“Liam Hendriks is the embodiment of integrity and compassion. His commitment to giving back reflects the highest ideals of Major League Baseball and makes him a most deserving nominee for the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award.”
