Deadline Day drama: Man United failed to sign wide attacker in surprise late move

0 8

Manchester United’s transfer window may have been one of their most turbulent in recent years, with a flurry of both arrivals and high-profile exits.

According to a report from Foot Mercato, the Red Devils attempted a late swoop for Lyon winger Malick Fofana after sanctioning several forward departures, but the deal ultimately failed to materialise.

United were among the busiest clubs in the Premier League this summer, adding Diego Leon, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and goalkeeper Senne Lammens to their squad.

However, it was the wave of attacking exits that raised eyebrows, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho all leaving Old Trafford before the window closed.

The loss of Garnacho in particular forced United to explore emergency options in attack.

Foot Mercato claim that United approached Malick Fofana, the 20-year-old Belgian-born winger.

Fofana has impressed in Ligue 1 with his quality, catching the eye of several top European clubs.

While the youngster was reportedly open to the idea of joining United, his representatives were unwilling to sanction a move this late in the window, leaving Ruben Amorim and his recruitment team empty-handed.

This missed opportunity comes at a time when United’s forward line looks considerably reshaped.

Sesko and Mbeumo provide fresh attacking options, but injuries, such as Cunha’s fitness concerns, and the lack of a natural left-sided winger raise questions about balance and depth.

Fofana, who has been described in France as one of the most promising wide players of his generation, could have offered a long-term replacement for Garnacho, but timing and agent reluctance blocked any progress.

The youngster has been linked with a move to United’s rivals Liverpool constantly and it appears like if he is available for a move, the transfer battle could get exciting between the two Premier League giants.
