Alex Cora Gives Injury Updates On Red Sox Infielder, Outfielder

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu hasn’t played in nearly one month due to a right calf strain.

Manager Alex Cora gave another injury update on the Gold Glover on Friday.

“Alex Cora on Wilyer Abreu: ‘He’s still working out, running up to 85%,'” Mac Cerullo of The Boston Herald posted on Bluesky. “Says there’s a few more things to get him to 90% and at that point he’ll probably be good to return.”

Abreu was placed on the injured list on Aug. 21.

Cora also discussed infielder Romy Gonzalez’s status. The 29-year-old exited Tuesday’s game against the Athletics due to a sore left knee and sat out Wednesday’s contest.

“Alex Cora says Romy Gonzalez will be available off the bench today and the hope is he’ll start tomorrow,” Cerullo posted on Bluesky.

Despite being sidelined for over three weeks, Abreu still ranks second on the team in home runs (22) and third in RBIs (69).

Gonzalez has set career highs across the board this season over 270 at-bats and 84 games. The former 18th-round pick has been particularly effective against lefties in 2025 with a .347/.396/.636 slash line vs. southpaws, while posting a .282/.301/.403 triple slash against righties.

The Red Sox will face New York Yankees ace left-hander Max Fried on Saturday.
