Aaron Boone Issues Injury Update On Key Infielder For Red Sox Series
The Boston Red Sox are kicking off a wildly important three-game series with the New York Yankees on Friday night. With both teams jostling for postseason position, this series could have some big playoff repercussions.
Over the past couple of weeks, the Red Sox have been hit hard by injuries, but they have managed to keep themselves neck-and-neck with the Yankees for the top wild card spot in the American League.
It’s also worth noting that New York isn’t 100% healthy heading into this series either. One guy in particular who has been banged up is shortstop Anthony Volpe, who has been playing through a labrum tear in his shoulder.
Volpe recently got a cortisone shot in his shoulder in an effort to help him play through this injury. However, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that he doesn’t think Volpe will start any games in their upcoming series against the Red Sox, although he could be available to come off the bench if needed.
“Aaron Boone said he doesn’t think Anthony Volpe will start any game this series but said hopefully he’s available in some capacity as he recovers from a cortisone shot in his shoulder,” Chris Kirschner of The Athletic shared in a post on X.
The 2025 season has been a bit of a struggle for Volpe, as he’s hitting just .206 with 19 home runs, 70 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. In his absence, the Yankees are turning to Jose Caballero to fill in for him at shortstop.
With Volpe battling a shoulder injury, the Red Sox could avoid facing off against him in this series. Lucas Giolito will attempt to lead Boston to a series-opening victory on Friday night, as he will square off on the mound against Luis Gil for New York.
