President Trump Gives Red Sox Surprising Shout-Out During Yankees Visit

The New York Yankees hosted the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, and President Trump was in attendance.

Trump, who was in New York City for the 24th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, met with the Yankees in their clubhouse prior to the game. He spoke about his relationship with George Steinbrenner and Randy Levine, told the Yankees that they’re going to “go all the way” this season and correctly predicted that they would win Thursday’s game, which they did, 9-3.

Trump also referenced the Boston Red Sox’s visit to the White House on July 3, when several players met with him in the Oval Office prior to their Independence Day weekend series against the Washington Nationals.

“The Boston Red Sox came to the Oval Office. They wanted to come, so what am I going to do, say no?” Trump said. “And they won 15 games in a row.”

The Yankees responded by calling the Red Sox’s winning streak “bad news” and vowing to change Boston’s luck during this weekend’s pivotal series at Fenway Park.

President Trump later posed for a picture with the team and was shown on the scoreboard during the national anthem.

While the Red Sox won 10 straight games after visiting Trump — not 15 — it was their longest winning streak of the season. They swept the Nationals, Colorado Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays prior to the All-Star Break, surging into contention after an inconsistent first half. Trump even posted about it at the time.

Now, the two division rivals are fighting for playoff positioning with just two weeks remaining in the regular season. New York (81-65) leads Boston (81-66) by half a game for the top wild card spot in the American League, making this weekend’s series between the two clubs incredibly important.
