Amorim finally breaks silence on exit of Man Utd man who 'refused to acknowledge' him in training

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has finally lifted the lid on the departure of goalkeeper Andre Onana.

United confirmed yesterday that the goalkeeper has joined Turkish giants Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

The loan deal does not include an option to buy, but Trabzonspor will cover his entire salary package.

Amorim was quizzed on Onana’s departure in the press conference today.

He replied (via ManUtd.com): “It could be, but I think not just us as a club, but also Andre, we understood that this needed a change, and sometimes it’s hard to perform why.

“It’s the performance, the moment, the bad luck in some moments was hard on him, was hard on us.

“Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers, but I wish the best to Andre Onana.”

Andre Onana’s exit is the right decision

The 29-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Inter Milan in 2023 in a deal worth around £47 million.

What was supposed to be a long-term solution in goal quickly turned into one of the club’s most costly mistakes.

He has played 102 times for United, conceding 150 goals, 18 of which came directly from his own errors.

His shot-stopping technique looks flawed, and he is easily bullied by opponents during corner set-pieces.

He suffered a hamstring injury on just the second day of pre-season, leaving Amorim furious.

Despite making several high-profile blunders, Onana pushed for a new contract with improved terms to offset the 25% wage cut caused by United missing out on Champions League football.

Tensions hit boiling point when he reportedly refused to acknowledge Amorim in training before the recent international break.

Moving him out of the club was clearly the right option, as he is not good enough to play between the sticks at Old Trafford.
