Dolphins Reportedly Sign Ex-Patriots First-Rounder Ahead Of Week 2 Matchup
Cole Strange has a new home.
The Dolphins signed the veteran offensive lineman off the Browns’ practice squad on Tuesday, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. Strange, a Patriots first-round pick in 2022, initially landed in Cleveland after being released by New England ahead of roster cutdowns. He will now count against Miami’s 53-man roster for at least three weeks.
The Patriots and Dolphins will play each other this Sunday in Miami. So, even if Strange doesn’t play, he still could provide the coaching staff with useful intel on his former team.
Drafted 22nd overall in 2022, Strange started 17 games at left guard for the Patriots as a rookie. The results were mixed, but he showed noticeable improvement the following season before a torn patellar tendon wiped out his final three games and sidelined him for roughly a year.
Strange returned late last season and saw time at guard and center. He worked at both positions this summer but ultimately didn’t do enough to earn a roster spot under new head coach Mike Vrabel.
Mike McDaniel’s offensive scheme might suit Strange better than what he played in while with the Patriots, as the Dolphins prioritize athletic offensive linemen who can get out in space. Regardless, at this point, Strange is a total reclamation project.
