Bremer: ‘Openda still apologising’ after ACL incident in RB Leipzig 2-3 Juventus
Juventus defender Gleison Bremer has joked that his new teammate Lois Openda will ‘still be apologising’ after an incident that led to the Brazilian rupturing his cruciate ligament (ACL) during a Champions League clash between the Bianconeri and RB Leipzig last season.
Bremer tore his cruciate ligament during Juventus’s 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in the league phase of last season’s Champions League, an injury which ultimately kept him out for the remainder of the season. He has recently marked his return to Serie A action nine months further down the line.
At the time of the injury, Bremer was chasing down and then collided with then-Leipzig striker Openda, who has recently completed a transfer from the Bundesliga side to Juventus.
What Bremer said about Juventus teammate Openda and ACL incident
Given that Openda joined Juventus on the final day of the summer transfer window, and then immediately reported for international duty with Belgium, he and Bremer have not yet had an opportunity to speak face-to-face.
Bremer, however, has revealed that Openda apologised profusely after the incident last year, and has joked that he will still be apologising when they meet up again later this week.
“It’s destiny,” Bremer said when asked about Openda becoming a new Juve teammate in a clip released on the club’s social media channels.
“Straight after the injury, after the match, he wrote to me apologising, saying he didn’t want for that to happen. Absolutely, it was an accident, a consequence of the game. I’ve done that action a thousand times before, but unfortunately it happened with him. These things happen. It’s normal.
“We haven’t seen each other here at Continassa yet, but it’s all good. He’ll still be apologising,” the Brazilian laughed.
