No, 12 McClymonds 14, No. 6 St. Francis 10
Sophomore defensive tackle Koi Taiese made two huge sacks with the game on the line, clinching McClymonds’ victory at home over Mountain View powerhouse St. Francis. Berell Staples threw touchdown passes to account for Mack’s scoring. The Oakland school improved to 1-1. St. Francis is 0-2. Devin Bradshaw was in Oakland and has the details here.
No. 3 Archbishop Riordan 34, Monte Vista 0
For the second week in a row, Mike Mitchell Jr. threw five touchdown passes for the Crusaders. The first was a 73-yard touchdown to Judge Nash, the second a four-yard jet toss to Kyle Welch, and the third a 13-yard fade to Cynai Thomas, an Oregon State commit. Thomas caught another scoring pass in second half, as did Judge Nash. Riordan improved to 2-0, and will play host to No. 2 Pittsburg in a showdown of premier Bay Area programs on Friday night. Soquel 21, No. 4 San Ramon Valley 14
For the second week in a row, Soquel beat a team ranked in the Bay Area News Group’s top 25. Last week the Knights knocked off No. 8 Los Gatos 42-40. Soquel marched 70 yards in the final three minutes to break a 14-14 tie. “We competed for four quarters,” SRV coach Aaron Becker said. “They are a good team. They might not lose a game all season.” The visiting Wolves (1-1) scored their first touchdown on a screen pass from quarterback Cole Dawes to Owen Power. Cole Eichten scored SRV’s second TD on a 1-yard run. The game was tied 7-7 after one quarter and 14-14 going into the fourth period. SRV, which is starting six sophomores and a junior quarterback in Dawes, will try to get back on the winning track next Friday when it visits Clayton Valley Charter. – Mike Lefkow
No. 8 Los Gatos 35, No. 10 Liberty 7
Los Gatos (1-1) scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter against Liberty (1-1) to seal a road win in front of a packed crowd at the Brentwood school. Callum Schweitzer threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another. Running backs Devonte Troutt and Grayson Doslak also had rushing scores for Los Gatos. Nathan Canilao has the complete story here.
Archbishop Mitty 33, No. 9 Wilcox 20
Mitty took a 27-7 lead into halftime at Foothill College and held off Wilcox (0-2) despite a 13-point third quarter for the visitors. Mitty’s Joseph Engin completed 15 of 19 passes for 220 yards and three TDs. Running back Lazaro Faraj-Washington had 22 carries for 150 yards and two TDs, plus two catches for 48 yards and a score for the Monarchs (1-1). Caden Kelly had four catches for 88 yards and a TD. Lucca Edwards had four receptions for 47 yards. Kai Sniffen had four receptions for 31 yards and a TD, plus four tackles defensively. “Beyond proud of the kids for their hard work,” Mitty coach Danny Sullivan said. — Christian Babcock
No. 11 Clayton Valley 35, College Park 16
A 21-point second quarter and five touchdowns from star running back Jhadis Luckey propelled the Ugly Eagles to their first victory of the year. Luckey scored three of his touchdowns in the second quarter to give Clayton Valley a 21-9 advantage at halftime. Jayden Auld and Akeem Smith each had a receiving touchdown for College Park in the loss. Clayton Valley will host San Ramon Valley next week while College Park is scheduled to travel to Salesian for its next game. – Nathan Canilao
Monterey Trail 14, No. 13 Amador Valley 10
After a scoreless first half, both teams scored touchdowns and two-point conversions in the third quarter to enter the final frame tied. Monterey Trail got the touchdown it needed down the stretch to send Amador back to Pleasanton with a tight loss. Nigel Flowers and Odie Jefferson scored touchdowns for Monterey Trail. — Darren Sabedra
No. 14 Acalanes 42, No. 17 Menlo-Atherton 3
Acalanes routed another Central Coast Section heavyweight for the second week in a row as the Lafayette school defeated Menlo-Atherton by 39 points at home. The Dons led 28-3 at halftime and didn’t look back. Senior Josh Elerts had a monster game, rushing for 171 yards and a score on 15 carries. Deonte Littlejohn had rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Tyler Winkles completed 9-of-10 passes for 120 yards and two scores – both to receiver Finley Rivera. Acalanes (2-0) will hit the road for the first time next week when it travels to San Francisco to play St. Ignatius. Menlo-Atherton will try to earn its first win of the season against Archbishop Mitty next week. – Nathan Canilao
No 15 Campolindo 42, Northgate 21
Senior running back Micah Parker led an effective Campolindo ground game with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. But Campo wasn’t as crisp as it wanted to be Friday, even as it improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2022, when it went 12-1. Northgate fell to 1-1. Curtis Pashelka has the game story here.
No. 21 California 17, James Logan 7
Jordan Lee rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown as the visiting Grizzlies improved to 2-0. Lee scored on a 40-yard run with two minutes left in the fourth quarter and California clinging to a 10-7 lead. The Grizzlies, who led 10-0 at the half, scored their first TD on a pass from quarterback Banerjee Arjun to Darius Brown. The junior receiver caught four passes for 59 yards. Angelos Gonzalez Teran ran for James Logan’s (1-1) touchdown in the third quarter. Gonzalez Teran totaled 65 rushing yards on 17 carries. – Mike Lefkow
No. 23 Santa Teresa 63, Milpitas 10
Santa Teresa (2-0) continues to romp over nonleague opponents in the early going, building off a 42-0 win over Fremont-Sunnyvale in Week 1 with another dominant display. The Saints scored 21 points in each of the first three quarters and led 63-3 to commence a running clock in the fourth quarter. Jaylen Malcom had three rushing TDs and also threw a TD pass for the Saints to AJ Rangel. Santa Teresa takes on Pioneer next week; Milpitas (1-1) will face Fremont-Sunnyvale. — Christian Babcock
No. 25 Sacred Heart Prep 35, El Capitan 27
The visiting Gators led 21-7 early in the second quarter only to have El Capitan of Merced tie it at halftime and take a 27-21 lead in the third quarter. Madyn Misra‘s fumble recovery gave SHP the ball at the El Capitan 46 and set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Cooper Karros. Nathan Fox‘s PAT put SHP ahead. Karros’ 2-yard run, his third TD of the game with 6 minutes left, provided breathing room. Maxime Morelle and Hunter Dolinka scored first-quarter rushing touchdowns. East Bay
Deer Valley 27, Novato 0
Adrian Masaniai threw one touchdown pass to Jaylan Bryant and two to Maurice Johnson in the first half to give Deer Valley an imposing 20-0 halftime lead. Masaniai then added on a 65-yard touchdown pass to Bryant to pad the lead and help the Wolverines improve to 2-0 on the season in the program’s first year under new head coach Marcus Malu. They will play host to Berkeley on Friday. — Joseph Dycus
Granada 14, Heritage 0
The Matadors notched their first win of the season behind a solid defensive showing on the road. Linebacker Cody Phillips and defensive end Nico Aumua led Granada’s defense as the Matadors didn’t allow Heritage to put a point on the board. Cornerback Noah Korndorfer returned an interception for a score and Phillips had a rushing touchdown. Granada moves to 1-0 and will host San Leandro next week. Heritage (0-2) travels to Dublin for its next game. – Nathan Canilao
Middletown 32, Piedmont 17
Sophomore quarterback Jimmy Lagios showed potential for Piedmont, connecting with Max Fujimoto a number of times against a tough Middletown defense. Coach Jordan Seiden said Highlander runners Xavier Henderson and Colby Hong ran tough inside, but getting defensive stops was an issue. “Gotta stop shouting ourselves in the foot… signs of a very young team,” Seiden said. Piedmont (0-2) will play host to Berean Christian on Friday. – Joseph Dycus
Miramonte 46, Alhambra 7
Quarterback Carson Blair threw four touchdown passes and Charlie Hwang rushed for three scores in a dominating performance by the host Matadors (2-0). Miramonte led 26-0 at the half and 40-7 after three quarters. “We played well on both sides of the ball,” Mats’ coach Nick Safir said. Senior receiver David Roman caught two of the TD’s thrown by Blair. Roman also had an interception. Other standouts on defense for Miramonte were linebacker Justin Jaloweic and junior free safety George Gilbert, who also intercepted an Alhambra pass. The Bulldogs fell to 1-1. – Mike Lefkow
South Bay/Peninsula
Branham 26, Willow Glen 10
Branham took a 14-0 first-quarter lead and closed out the contest with a 12-point fourth quarter. The Bruins had four interceptions – Maddox Nazzisi had two, Alex Madrigal and Chris Duarte one each – to keep the Rams at bay. Branham’s Andrew Ho went 18 of 29 for 246 yards and two TDs, adding 11 carries for 27 yards. Running back Michael Murphy had 19 carries for 91 yards and two TDs, plus five catches for 94 yards and a score. Brayden Hodges had six catches for 95 yards and a TD. Willow Glen’s Aidan Akery threw for 89 yards with a TD to Caden Morefield. Chris Amann had an interception, fumble recovery, sack and blocked PAT for the Rams. — Christian Babcock
Burlingame 35, Palo Alto 14
Harrison Evars ran for 133 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown and Hayden Haba finished with 93 on 18 carries with three scores as Burlingame (1-1) rolled to a victory on the road over Palo Alto (0-2). David Kiefer has all the details from the Thursday game here.
Christopher 42, Gilroy 7
Christopher took care of business and picked up its first win of the season in this all-Gilroy battle as six players scored touchdowns. Casen Pauneto, Adrian Leon, Ryan Holt, Logan DaSilva, Brady Hemeon and tackle Siaosi Vai all scored as the Cougars dominated on the road. Christopher (1-1) will next take on Palo Alto, while Gilroy (0-2) will move on to face Delhi. — Christian Babcock
Jesuit-Carmichael 42, Bellarmine 7
Bellarmine, playing on the road in the Sacramento area, never recovered after allowing 21 first-quarter points as Jesuit cruised to the non-league victory to improve to 2-1. Jackson Morales 22-yard pass to James Fuqua late in the fourth quarter accounted for the Bells’ scoring. For Jesuit, Teddy Rios threw touchdown passes of 26 yards to Stevie Hughes and 88 yards to Noah Briceño and Brody Quinn got the scoring started with an 85-yard run. John Giovannettone added an 8-yard touchdown run and Jeremiah Brannon connected with Rocco Lucchetti for an 11-yard score. Quinn added a 9-yard touchdown run to make it 42-0. Bellarmine (1-1) plays Los Altos next week before opening its WCAL schedule. — Darren Sabedra
MacDonald 42, Mt. Pleasant 0
The Condors, in their second year of varsity football, improved to 2-0 and have outscored their first two opponents by a combined 70-6. Siaosi Hautau scored three touchdowns Friday, on a 3-yard run, a 26-yard interception return and a 80-yard pass reception from Moussa Fall, who threw for two touchdowns and ran one in from the 19. Isaiah Tela got the scoring started with a 22-yard run. MacDonald led 42-0 at halftime. — Glenn Reeves
Piedmont Hills 45, Independence 7
The Pirates (2-0) routed Independence (1-1) in this all-San Jose matchup, inducing a running clock at home. Piedmont Hills scored seven points in the first quarter and 17 in the second while pitching a first-half shutout to build a 24-0 halftime lead. The dominance continued in the third quarter, as the Pirates added 21 more points. Piedmont Hills will next take on Willow Glen, while Independence will host power program Windsor from the North Bay. — Christian Babcock
Pioneer 13, Leland 0
Braeden Ries connected with Connor Christensen on a 13-yard touchdown pass on Pioneer’s first possession, accounting for the game’s only touchdown in this matchup between Almaden Valley rivals, as defense dominated in the Mustangs’ win at home over Leland in the Battle of the Den. Lincoln-San Jose 48, San Jose 24
The Lions won their 27th Big Bone game in a row over San Jose. Kyan Phillips scored four touchdowns – two rushing, one receiving and one punt return – as Lincoln continued its domination of the oldest rivalry in the South Bay. Joseph Dycus was at San Jose City College and has the details here.
Woodside 41, Mountain View 0
The Wildcats continued their spotless start to the season, shutting down a Mountain View team that put up 46 points in a Week 1 win over Palo Alto. Senior running back Evan Frampton capably filled the shoes of departed star back Evan Usher with 130 yards and two rushing TDs while also handing off a TD to Daniel Torres off a direct snap.
