Red Sox Reportedly Calling Up Ex-Giants Pitcher From Rafael Devers Trade
Nearly three months after the Boston Red Sox acquired Kyle Harrison from the San Francisco Giants, his Red Sox debut now appears imminent.
Harrison, who was acquired from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade on June 15, was assigned to Triple-A Worcester following the trade. He’s pitched well there this summer, going 4-2 with a 3.65 ERA in 49 1/3 innings over 11 starts.
According to multiple sources, Harrison appears headed for Boston. WooSox reporter Tommy Cassell reported via X on Tuesday that Harrison “is leaving Polar Park with his bags packed. He’s headed up to Boston.”
Boston Herald reporter Gabrielle Starr confirmed the report on X, writing, “Harrison being called up and is expected to arrive at Fenway Park this afternoon.”
The Red Sox have yet to confirm the news at the time of writing, but the move’s timing makes sense given that the club doesn’t have a scheduled starting pitcher for Wednesday’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians. While Harrison may be available to pitch Tuesday night if needed, it’s more likely he’ll be used either as a starter or a bulk reliever in Wednesday’s game.
The 24-year-old lefty has not pitched in the Major Leagues since June 10. Before the trade, he was 1-1 with a 4.56 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP and a 25:9 K/BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings this season.
Harrison, who debuted with San Francisco in 2023, is 9-9 with a 4.48 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP and an 8.8 K/9 in 182 2/3 innings. His lone career appearance at Fenway Park came on May 2, 2024, when he allowed one run on three hits and five walks with seven strikeouts over five innings.
Harrison’s former Giants teammate, Jordan Hicks, has struggled in Boston since the trade, going 1-2 with a 6.38 ERA in 20 relief appearances. The Red Sox are probably hoping Harrison can provide more of a boost down the stretch.
