Patriots Shake Up Leadership With Bold Captain Choices
The New England Patriots unveiled their six captains for the 2025 season on Monday with a social media announcement.
Drake Maye, the second-year quarterback, tops the list after a rookie campaign that produced a Pro Bowl selection and more than 2,200 passing yards. He has already become the centerpiece of the franchise’s new direction under head coach Mike Vrabel.
“As a quarterback, you have to do it in a manner that gets their attention,” Vrabel said earlier this summer of Maye’s leadership role, as transcribed in a team statement.
Robert Spillane, signed in March, quickly emerged as the defensive voice of the locker room. His competitive style and energy filled the gap left by longtime veterans and set the tone for Vrabel’s revamped unit, according to The Times of India.
Hunter Henry, now in his third season as a captain, remains a steady presence for both teammates and coaches. He was honored with the Ron Burton Community Service Award in recognition of his off-field contributions, as reported by Sports Illustrated.
Cornerback Marcus Jones, a 2022 draft pick known for his versatility, is wearing the “C” for the first time. His impact on defense and as a returner has been matched by his growing stature in the locker room.
Harold Landry III, another Vrabel connection, adds proven pass-rush skill to the mix. His captaincy underscores the trust earned from both staff and teammates since arriving in March.
Special teamer Brenden Schooler, undrafted in 2022 but now a Pro Bowl and All-Pro pick, rounds out the six. He steps into the leadership role once held by Matthew Slater.
With last season’s captains all gone, Vrabel has reshaped the Patriots’ identity around a new core of leaders.
