35/37 passes, 6/7 aerials, 6 clearances: 26yo Man Utd star had a superlative display vs Fulham
Manchester United shared the spoils against Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils went into the game after a promising display against Arsenal at Old Trafford.
They made an equally good start with Matheus Cunha hitting the woodwork early on.
Bruno Fernandes had the opportunity to put United into the lead before the break, but he fluffed his lines with a wayward penalty.
United eventually got the lead from a Rodrigo Muniz own goal, but Emile Smith Rowe equalised seconds after entering the field.
Despite the stalemate, there are plenty of positives to carry forward. The backline was solid once more, with Matthijs de Ligt standing out.
The Dutchman was brilliant in the air, winning six out of seven duels contested. He completed 37 out of 39 passes with an accuracy of 95 percent.
De Ligt also made six clearances, including one off the line. He likewise made a couple of interceptions and won a crucial tackle at Craven Cottage.
The 26-year-old could not stop the cross for Smith Rowe’s equaliser, but in our view, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes should have done better.
Dalot was guilty of losing the ball in the lead-up, while Fernandes failed to track the run of Smith Rowe. He should have been more aware of the situation.
United will be disappointed with the nature of the equaliser. They could have also won the game, had Fernandes kept his composure from the penalty spot.
The Portuguese has surprisingly missed five penalties since he arrived in 2020. No other Premier League player has squandered more during the same period.
United will be aiming for their first victory of the season when they travel to Grimsby Town for the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.
