Red Sox New Addition Leaves Early Mark On Rivalry

Nathaniel Lowe has been with the Boston Red Sox for less than a week, but he’s already putting his mark on the best rivalry in the sport.

In the top of the seventh inning in Thursday’s 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees, Lowe doubled to right-center field to drive in Trevor Story, giving the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.

“I was just trying to get a good pitch to hit and hit it hard,” Lowe said. “And I did.”

Lowe has played against the Yankees plenty of times throughout his seven-year career, but Thursday was his first taste of the rivalry.

“It was exciting. It was an exciting game. The back and forth was pretty fun. It was nice to go ahead, and obviously the huge homer there for the dagger at the end was great, but it was a lot of fun,” Lowe said.

The series opener marked Lowe’s second start for the Red Sox. It was his second big hit for the team as well, the first being a game-tying home run in Tuesday’s loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Lowe went 1-4 on Thursday. He’s now 2-8 with a walk since joining the Red Sox. The team designated Abraham Toro for assignment before Thursday’s game, so Lowe will be the primary first baseman against right-handed pitching going forward.

The Yankees have lefty Max Fried scheduled to start on Friday, so Lowe will likely hit the bench in favor of righty Romy Gonzalez.
