Red Sox And Yankees Heading In Opposite Directions Ahead Of Pivotal Series
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have been running in opposite directions all season. The Yankees started fast while the Red Sox started slow, then Boston surged while New York faded this summer.
Now, it’s the Yankees who are hot and the Red Sox who’ve gone cold entering a massive four-game series at Yankee Stadium this weekend.
After sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays on the road, New York returns home on a five-game winning streak. The red-hot Yankees have returned to form, winning seven of their last eight and reclaiming second place in the American League East.
Meanwhile, Boston heads to the Bronx on a three-game losing streak. The Red Sox have stumbled after a hot start to August, dropping seven of their last 10 games and falling from second to third in the division.
Fortunately for Boston, the Seattle Mariners have also faltered, losing seven of their last eight games. The Red Sox still lead them by half a game for the second AL wild card spot.
With five and a half weeks remaining in the regular season, this weekend’s rivalry series could have major playoff implications for Boston and New York. The Yankees lead the Red Sox by 1.5 games for the top AL wild card spot and are only four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. They have a chance to close their gap with the Blue Jays and put some distance between themselves and Boston.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have an opportunity to get back on track and reclaim some of the ground they’ve lost over the last two weeks. They’re 5-1 against New York this year, and that was before they took off midseason and hit their stride.
For the first time since 2021, both sides have plenty at stake in a series this late in the season. Their showdown kicks off at 7:15 p.m. ET tonight on FOX.
