Trevor Story Describes Funny Relationship With Red Sox Teammate In Two Words
At 32 years old, Trevor Story is the oldest everyday position player on the Boston Red Sox. He’s surrounded by rookies and players considerably younger than him, including Roman Anthony (21), Marcelo Mayer (22) and Ceddanne Rafaela (24).
One of those players is Jarren Duran, who’s four years younger than Story at 28. While that may not seem like a big difference, Duran was only a freshman in college when Story made his Major League debut for the Colorado Rockies in 2016.
With a decade of MLB experience, Story has emerged as a veteran leader for his younger teammates. Accordingly, the way he views his relationship with Duran isn’t too surprising.
In a joint Players on Players interview for MLB Players’ Weekend, Story described his relationship with Duran as “father-son.”
“Obviously, we know who’s the father,” Story said. “Just taking care of you on a daily basis is probably the biggest part of my day. I take a lot of pride in it, though.”
While teammates often describe themselves as brothers, Story and Duran seemingly have a different type of family dynamic.
Story did acknowledge that he sometimes borrows pants from Duran’s locker, although the pants fit “pretty tight.” While they are listed as roughly the same height and weight, Story claims he has bigger and stronger legs.
Story’s mentorship has helped Duran develop into one of the best outfielders in baseball. He was an All-Star for the first time last year and is having another strong season, batting .263/.334/.453 with 12 home runs, 19 steals and 3.8 WAR.
Already a two-time All-Star, Story is having a similarly productive campaign and his best season in years, hitting .256/.301/.419 with 18 homers, 20 steals and 2.8 WAR.
Together, this faux father-son duo has helped the Red Sox go 66-56, putting the team in playoff position with 40 games remaining. While they’ve clearly grown close during their four seasons as teammates, this could be the first time they make the postseason together.
