Rumor: Red Sox Likely Still Interested In Former Trade Target

Three months ago, the Boston Red Sox reportedly reached out to the Washington Nationals regarding first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. While MassLive’s Sean McAdam couldn’t confirm it at the time, he officially confirmed it on Friday after the Nationals designated Lowe for assignment on Thursday.

McAdam verified that the Red Sox “inquired about Lowe’s availability earlier in the season when (Triston) Casas was first injured, so presumably there would be at least some interest.”

When Casas went down with a season-ending on May 2, Lowe was off to a good start for the Nationals. His OPS was above .800 for most of April and remained near that level through the first week of May, so Washington may have been less inclined to part ways with him at the time.

Lowe’s production has dropped off over the last several months, however, presumably causing the Nationals to sour on him as they’ve fallen out of contention. Since July 10, he’s hitting .143/.257/.242 with two home runs, seven RBI and 25 strikeouts over his last 27 games.

Boston could still use a first baseman given Abraham Toro’s recent slump, however, and may remain interested in the 30-year-old veteran. Recent slump aside, he’s slugged at least 16 homers in five straight seasons and helped the Texas Rangers win the World Series in 2023.

McAdam writes that the Red Sox may opt to see if Lowe clears waivers and try to sign him at a discount rather than claiming him and taking on his remaining $3 million salary.

Given his power, leadership and championship experience, Lowe seems like a good fit for Boston. The Red Sox have struggled to get reliable production at first base this year, ranking 24th in wRC+ (87) at the position. Lowe has a career 117 wRC+, so he could be a potential upgrade there and lengthen Boston’s lineup.

With the Red Sox fighting for a playoff spot, every game counts at this stage of the season. If Lowe could deliver some big hits and help them win a few extra games down the stretch, bringing him aboard would be well worth it.
