Red Sox ‘Should Take A Peek’ At Nathaniel Lowe, MLB Writer Says
Some feel that the Boston Red Sox should consider adding a first baseman who was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
Nathaniel Lowe, 30, was DFA’d by Washington, FOX Sports reported. Entering Thursday, Lowe was slashing .216/ .292/ .373/ .665 in 2025, signficantly worse than his career .263/ .346/ .424/ .771 line. Lowe does have 16 home runs and 68 RBIs this year.
A Gold Glove Award winner (2023) and Silver Slugger Award winner (2022), Lowe won a World Series in 2023 with the Texas Rangers.
In June, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden linked Lowe to the Red Sox as a trade target.
Now that Lowe’s been DFA’d, should Boston make a move to acquire him? PitcherList’s Griffey Geiss gave his opinion on the matter on Thursday following the DFA news.
“Red Sox should take a peek at Nate Lowe,” Geiss posted to X.
“Disappointing year offensively with zero babip luck but has still been somewhat above average vs. RHP — .235/.312/.421, 104 wRC+ … 41% HH, 7% barrel (highest since 2022). … a platoon between Lowe and Romy (González) at 1B wouldn’t be an awful option to hold the fort until (Kristian) Campbell is ready.”
The Red Sox have had questions at first base ever since Triston Casas was lost for the year to a ruptured patellar tendon back in May.
González and Abraham Toro have filled in nicely for Casas, although Toro has been less effective of late.
Lowe began his career in the American League East playing for the Tampa Bay Rays, who selected Lowe with the No. 390 overall pick in the 2016 MLB draft. Lowe’s brother, Josh, currently plays for the Rays.
