Man United midfielder in advanced talks over Championship loan switch

0 0

According to The Athletic, midfielder Toby Collyer is in advanced talks with Championship side West Bromwich Albion over a season-long loan deal.

The Manchester United youngster has been a subject of interest from several Championship sides, including Hull City, but West Brom appear to have won the race for his signature.

The Baggies believe the young midfielder can aid their push for promotion to the Premier League under head coach Ryan Mason. They have not played in the top tier since the 2020/21 season.

The 21-year-old, who joined United from Brighton’s academy in 2022, impressed in the club’s youth ranks and debuted for the first team under Erik ten Hag in the Community Shield match against Manchester City in August 2024.

Collyer made 19 appearances across all competitions last season. In January, he caught the eye in the Europa League encounter with Rangers, registering a record-breaking statistic.

He also contributed to the Premier League victory at Fulham, when he cleared the ball off the line to ensure a 1-0 win.

However, the English midfielder is down the pecking order and risks not getting enough game time next season.

Captain Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro are United’s first-choice midfielders, and there is also a possibility that Carlos Baleba could join from Brighton.

A move to West Brom could benefit Collyer’s development, provided he can nail a starting berth.

Mason’s preferred formation is 4-2-3-1, meaning Collyer would play as one of the two midfield pivots. He would compete with Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby, the first-choice midfield pair, for a place in the starting line-up.

United already sent several youngsters out on loan, including Habeeb Ogunneye, Ethan Wheatley, Dan Gore, and Elyh Harrison. Collyer is now set to join them in a bid to gain more first-team experience.
