Rio Ferdinand explains why Sesko would be different from Hojlund at Man United

0 1

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has explained why striker Benjamin Sesko would thrive better at the club than Rasmus Hojlund.

Sesko completed a move from RB Leipzig over the weekend in a deal worth €85 million (£73.5m). United have confirmed that he will wear the no.30 jersey, donned by fellow new signing Diego Leon in pre-season.

The Slovenian is expected to replace Hojlund as United’s first-choice striker, with the latter struggling since his move from Atalanta in 2023. The Danish striker has scored a measly 26 goals in 95 games.

His arrival could now pave the way for Hojlund’s departure. United have already told the Copenhagen’s academy product to leave, with Serie A being his likely destination.

Sesko’s arrival has drawn comparisons with that of Hojlund, as neither did not play for a team the size of United before joining the club.

However, Ferdinand believes United are a better team than when Hojlund moved to Old Trafford, giving him confidence that Sesko would thrive.

He told Rio Ferdinand Presents: “There are more goals and players that understand the Premier League, more experience up top, and you would like to think that counts for a lot going into the new season to help a number nine coming into the building.”

The former England international’s opinion is premised on the arrival of forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both of whom were standouts in the English top flight last season.

Mbeumo registered 27 goal involvements while Cunha recorded 21 to rank in the top 10 for players with the most goal contributions.

The pair’s arrival is expected to give United more firepower in attack, and Sesko could benefit from playing with them.

The trio could make their official debut for the Manchester outfit against Arsenal at Old Trafford next Sunday.
