Former Palestinian Football Star Suleiman al-Obeid Killed in Israeli Strike
Former Palestinian football star Suleiman al-Obeid, nicknamed the “Pelé of Palestine,” was killed in an Israeli strike while awaiting humanitarian aid.
The Palestinian Football Federation has announced that Suleiman al-Obeid, a former national team player known as the “Pelé of Palestine,” was killed in an Israeli attack in southern Gaza.
According to the federation, the 41-year-old died when Israeli forces targeted a group of civilians waiting to receive humanitarian aid. The incident occurred amid ongoing heavy bombardments in the area.
Al-Obeid was born on 24 March 1984 in Gaza. Renowned for his technical skills and distinctive playing style, he earned the nickname “Pelé of Palestine” during his football career.
The Palestinian Football Federation reported that since the start of the war, at least 662 athletes and their family members have been killed in Gaza, including 103 children. Of these, 421 were footballers.
In addition, 288 sports facilities in Gaza and the West Bank have been damaged or destroyed, half of which were football fields and clubs, according to the federation.
Al-Obeid leaves behind his wife and five children. His death has sparked grief among Palestinians, with tributes pouring in from fellow players, coaches, and fans who remember his contributions to the sport.
The incident highlights the growing toll of the conflict on civilians and the sports community in Gaza. International organizations have repeatedly called for the protection of civilians and infrastructure, but attacks on public gatherings and facilities have continued.
