Aston Villa transfer interest in former star re-emerges amid John McGinn links

0 6

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in facilitating the return of Douglas Luiz if they choose to sell a midfielder, according to reports.

Villa have been linked consistently with Luiz since he left the club to join Juventus last summer for a fee in the region of £42 million. He has had a difficult spell in Italy under both former manager Thiago Motta and his successor, Igor Tudor.

Premier League clubs including Villa, Everton, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest are reportedly monitoring Luiz’s situation, albeit with a preference for a loan deal that isn’t believed to be on Juve’s agenda.

The Bianconeri want a permanent transfer, though that stance could soften later in the transfer window. Luiz’s current market value is estimated at around £26 million.

According to reports, Luiz is considered a potential replacement for captain John McGinn should he depart, an eventuality so unlikely at this point that it’s barely worth countenancing.

Struggles in Turin

Luiz left Villa Park with a good reputation and an impressive record across 204 appearances in all competitions. He made 46 goal contributions, an excellent contribution for a central midfielder who was often deployed in a deeper and more defensive role in front of the back four.

The Brazilian midfielder hasn’t been able to replicate that form at Juventus, lacking consistency and struggling with muscle injuries.

He started only three times in Serie A and three times in the Champions League but is believed to still be in Tudor’s plans at the start of the new season.

Luiz’s World Cup hopes

With the World Cup less than a year away, Luiz will be considering a move away from Juventus to ensure regular playing time. Without impressing Tudor quickly, staying in Serie A could harm his chances of representing Brazil next summer.

The 27-year-old missed out on the last World Cup in Qatar despite excellent form with Villa. He has earned 18 international caps but his last call-up was over a year ago.
