Tottenham’s Daniel Levy reveals one thing that really worries him about modern football

0 6

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has spoken about one of the biggest issues affecting the modern game, warning the football administrators that they have to be very careful of the current system being abused by some owners.

As Spurs fans will be aware, Daniel Levy made a rare media appearance earlier this week, speaking about a number of topics related to Tottenham and the wider game.

During the interview, Levy insisted that he does not get enough credit for building the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, pointing out how the move to the venue has secured the club’s financial future over the long term.

The Tottenham chairman also insisted that he does not interfere in footballing decisions, labelling those accusations as ‘completely unfair’.

Tottenham’s Daniel Levy warns authorities about multi-club ownership

The 63-year-old and Gary Neville also discussed the financial health of the game and the changes that football is going through.

Levy admitted during the exchange that he is particularly concerned about multi-club ownership, pointing out that it could open the door for the financial regulations to be abused by some owners.

The Tottenham chairman said on The Overlap: “I’d say we’re going through a period of significant change. The Premier League is already the most competitive league in the world – more competitive now than it’s ever been.

“We’re also entering a new phase of government intervention and regulation. Personally, I’m not in favour of that, but it’s coming, and we have to accept and embrace it.

“Sustainability is absolutely fundamental to the long-term health of the game across the entire football pyramid. One of the biggest issues right now is multi-club ownership, which barely existed five years ago but is now becoming far more prevalent.”

The Tottenham supremo added: “Am I against it? I think we have to be very careful. When a single ownership group is involved in multiple clubs, and with the kind of money in the game today, there needs to be strict oversight.

“Are we talking about how costs are distributed among those clubs? Yes, that’s part of it. We have financial control measures in place, but the system can be abused. And that worries me.

“There’s so much money in the game now that it only takes one owner behaving inappropriately to damage the confidence of sponsors and broadcasters, not just here but across European football. That’s why this needs very tight control.”

Modern football is at risk of eating itself

Given the amount of money involved in the game, it is only natural that owners will look for any competitive edge or loophole to take advantage of.

Unless the authorities are very careful in their policing of multi-club ownership, it is inevitable that some owners will look to circumvent the financial regulations.

Daniel Levy’s concerns about sponsors losing trust are a legitimate one, coming not only from a Tottenham bias. We have seen in other sports, and even with the Serie A match-fixing scandal, how a perceived lack of legitimacy may have serious financial implications on competitions.
