VIDEO: New Milan arrival Luka Modric asked Christian Pulisic if he spoke Croatian — His hilarious five-word reply broke the internet
A sea of red and black surrounded the heart of Milan this week as thousands of Rossoneri fans gathered to welcome Luka Modric to AC Milan. The 39-year-old Croatian maestro, fresh off his legendary 13-year tenure at Real Madrid, has embarked on what many believe could be a graceful final chapter of his glittering career.
Modric’s move to San Siro has been met with a mix of nostalgia and hope — nostalgia for his remarkable years dominating European soccer with Madrid, and hope for the leadership, experience, and winning mentality he promises to bring to Milan’s dressing room.
Yet amid the grand reception and headline-grabbing signing, a brief, humorous exchange between Modric and fellow Rossoneri star Christian Pulisic has become the talk of the internet — and it all started with a question about language.
The hilarious exchange
As Modric was introduced to his new teammates at Milanello, he shared a warm greeting with Christian Pulisic, who joined the club from Chelsea in 2023. Their hug hinted at familiarity beyond the soccer pitch — and with good reason. Pulisic, though born and raised in the United States, has Croatian roots through his grandfather, Mate, who was born on the island of Olib near Zadar. This shared heritage has long made Modric a special figure for the American winger.
Back in June, Pulisic had already spoken about what Modric means to him and his family: “When I was at Chelsea and we played against Real Madrid, at the end of the game I spoke to Kovacic,” the USMNT star told reporters. “You know, I have Croatian roots on my grandfather’s side and all my cousins, to give you an idea, named their dog ‘Luka’ for Luka Modric! He is an idol in my family. I told Kovacic that I really wanted his shirt, also for my family. A legendary player.”
So when the two finally met as teammates, the experienced veteran couldn’t resist asking a simple question: “Do you speak Croatian?” The response? “No. Only the passport is Croatian,” Pulisic replied, laughing.

That five-word comeback quickly made the rounds on social media, sparking reactions of amusement and endearment from fans around the world. The moment captured both the cultural pride and the humility that have defined Pulisic’s career.
Croatian roots, American dream
Back in 2016, while still a player for Borussia Dortmund, Pulisic got his Croatian passport. As a dual citizen, he now has more freedom to play in any EU country thanks to the decision to streamline the work permit procedure in Europe.
There was a time when the Croatian Football Federation even considered bringing the 26-year-old forward into their national team setup. Still, he ultimately chose to represent the United States — where he has now become the undisputed face of the national side.
Still, he has never hidden his affection for the Balkan country. In an earlier interview, he noted: “I have been to Zagreb a few times and I really liked it. It is a beautiful country and I am proud of my Croatian roots. I visited with my grandfather and it was a wonderful experience.”
