Atalanta identify Crystal Palace striker Mateta as top striker target
Atalanta are on the hunt for a new striker and whilst they appreciate Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz and Genk’s Tolu Arokodare, the player they like most is Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.
According to Football Italia journalist Alfredo Pedullà on X, La Dea are assessing the feasibility of a move for the French forward, who scored 14 goals in the Premier League last season and helped Crystal Palace lift the FA Cup.
On Sunday, Palace will play against Liverpool in the Community Shield and the club and player are focused on this objective. After the match, however, there may be more room to discuss a deal, if Atalanta wish to proceed with their interest in the striker.
Mateta wanted after strong 2024-25 season
Reports last week suggested that Crystal Palace had rejected a bid of €34.7 million from La Dea for the French forward. The same reports claimed that it was not clear if the Premier League side were prepared to entertain improved bids.
The Frenchman was vital to Palace’s success last season and Atalanta view him as a strong candidate to replace Mateo Retegui. Retegui departed Atalanta to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah earlier this summer for a fee of €65 million.
