'Made it clear': 21-goal star now has a predilection for Man Utd - Jacobs

Manchester United have the upper hand over Newcastle United in the pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

The Red Devils have primarily focused on bolstering their frontline this summer.

They have already signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and are now focused on landing Leipzig’s Sesko.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Slovenian has ‘made it clear’ that he wants to join United ahead of Newcastle.

The Magpies have offered improved terms, but there is a growing sense within United that Sesko will join them if the clubs can reach a deal.

United’s focus is on finalising an agreement with Leipzig as they believe Sesko is waiting for them.

Man Utd may need to match Newcastle’s bid to land Sesko

The Red Devils have made an opening bid of £74 million, including add-ons for the Slovenian.

It is presently £4.3m less than what the Magpies have offered to purchase the 22-year-old ace.

Leipzig are a tough club to negotiate with, and they are likely to hold out for the highest offer.

Unless Sesko hands in a transfer request and gives up on his loyalty bonuses, Leipzig may not accept a lower price.

Sesko’s agent has repeatedly said that the striker wants to leave on good terms, and that may not be a solution.

Hence, the onus is on United to increase their package to secure a deal with the Bundesliga outfit.

Sesko had a good 2024/25 campaign with Leipzig, registering 21 goals alongside six assists.

However, he found the back of the net only 13 times in the German top flight from 33 outings.

Former United coach Rene Meulensteen has already questioned the club’s ongoing transfer pursuit of Sesko.

The 61-year-old believes United are taking a ‘risky’ option with the Slovenian after the struggles of Rasmus Hojlund.

Meulensteen believes a striker with Premier League experience, such as Jean-Philippe Mateta, would be a safer solution.

It remains to be seen how Sesko handles the pressure next season if he were to join United.
