Red Sox Give Discouraging Injury Updates On Two Pitchers

Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Alex Cora delivered disappointing injury updates on a pair of pitchers on Sunday morning.

“Craig Breslow said he doesn’t expect Patrick Sandoval, who has had setbacks in his Tommy John rehab and is not currently throwing, to pitch this year,” Tim Healey of the Boston Globe posted on Bluesky. “Alex Cora said he isn’t confident Liam Hendriks will pitch again this season.”

Patrick Sandoval suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament midway through his final season with the Los Angeles Angels in 2024 and then signed a two-year, $18.25 million contract with the Red Sox in December. Sandoval’s recovery has been delayed, however, and he’s yet to take the mound in a Boston uniform.

Liam Hendriks signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Red Sox in February 2024, though he missed all of last season due to an elbow injury. Hendriks was activated off the injured list in mid-May but appeared in just 14 games before landing on the IL again, this time due to right hip inflammation.

The three-time All-Star is 0-2 this season and has allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits, seven walks and 12 strikeouts across 13 2/3 innings pitched.
