QUEEN’S PARK under-19s ran out 3-1 winners over Rangers under-20s in a friendly at Auchenhowie on Saturday lunchtime.
Charley King’s young Spiders were limited in their numbers with several eligible players called into Sean Crighton’s first-team squad for the trip to Raith Rovers in the William Hill Championship.
Several under-17s were called into the squad despite playing against Dundee on Friday night.
The selection issues bore no bearing on the game though as goals from Connor Falls, Cole Goldie and Josiah Sowa gave the Spiders a second win inside a week.
The team won 2-1 in Dundee on Tuesday and the game had similarities to that one, with an opener from Connor Falls and the half-time lead for the Spiders.
Falls caught the Gers keeper off his line and scored a long-range lob from almost the halfway line to add to his midweek opener.
The second came from Cole Goldie, running on to a ball over the top into his path from Ollie Fisher and converting for the interval advantage.
Rangers regrouped at half-time and dominated the second half, playing the Spiders on the backfoot for much of the remainder, eventually forcing a goal back with ten minutes to go.
However as they sought an equaliser, Josiah Sowa won and scored a penalty late on after being released on the counter-attack by Goldie and he notched the final goal as he had in midweek.
Coach Charley King said: “We had several players on duty with the first-team so called up some under-17s from the team which played [on Friday] night.
“As a result we had to play different formations which was good learning and development for us.
“Despite that the players performed well and capped off an overall very positive week for us with a good win for us against a good opponent.”
Next up for the team is a friendly against Dumbarton’s under-20s on Thursday.
