Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? Real Madrid star Vinicius makes bold GOAT choice that may stun fans

One of the biggest stars at Real Madrid—and one of soccer’s most promising icons—has revealed where his loyalty lies in this legendary rivalry.

For nearly two decades, the soccer world has been split by one of the most impassioned debates in sports history: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi—who is the true Greatest of All Time? Both superstars have shattered records, conquered leagues, and left their mark on the beautiful game. But every once in a while, a new voice enters the fray with personal insight, tilting the conversation in one direction.

Now, one of the biggest stars at Real Madrid—and one of soccer’s most promising icons—has revealed where his loyalty lies in this legendary rivalry. Vinicius Junior, Brazil’s electric winger and one of Madrid’s most influential players, has now voiced his personal choice, offering a six-word answer that settles the debate—for him, at least.

Vinicius joined Real Madrid in 2018 as a teenager from Flamengo. Since then, he has rapidly climbed into the upper echelon of soccer’s elite. With dazzling pace, a refined eye for goal, and unmatched flair, he has become one of Los Blancos’ most vital attackers, especially during their recent Champions League triumphs.

At just 25 years and 325 days old, Vinicius etched his name in the history books by becoming the youngest player to score in two Champions League finals, surpassing Messi’s record by thirteen days. His goals in the 2023 and 2024 UCL finals against Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, respectively, have already written him into Real Madrid folklore. But when asked about the figures who shaped his soccer journey, the Brazilian offered an answer that caught many by surprise.

Vinicius names his GOAT

In an exclusive interview with GQ Magazine, the Brazilian star didn’t hesitate to share who inspired his approach to the game: “Cristiano Ronaldo’s my biggest inspiration. His dedication, his hunger to stay at the top—it’s unmatched.”

That simple declaration—“Cristiano Ronaldo’s my biggest inspiration”—draws a line in the sand. It’s a clear nod to the man who dominated the Bernabéu before Vinicius’ arrival, a player whose shadow still looms large over the Spanish capital.

Vinicius continued: “Cristiano always wanted to be the best, not just in the team but in the world.” In addition to Ronaldo, he also cited LeBron James for his off-the-field leadership and commitment to community work: “I admire LeBron James for similar reasons and his impact on the community.”

No Mention of Messi

Perhaps most telling was who Vinicius did not mention. Despite Lionel Messi’s legendary status—including an eight-time Ballon d’Or haula World Cup win with Argentina, and unparalleled achievements at Barcelona—Vinicius left the Argentine icon off his list entirely.

Instead, he highlighted Brazilian heroes like Ronaldo Nazario, Ronaldinho, and Neymar: “They’ve shown the world the talent and joy we bring to the game.” This omission speaks volumes, especially coming from a player who has watched Messi’s greatness up close, both in La Liga and on the international stage.
