More Reporting Emerges About Red Sox’s Attempt To Acquire Joe Ryan
Despite some erroneous reporting to the contrary, Joe Ryan is not heading to the Boston Red Sox.
A social media snafu unfolded during Thursday night’s MLB trade deadline when FOX Sports and Yahoo Sports inaccurately tweeted that the Red Sox acquired Ryan from the Minnesota Twins. Although the Twins moved 11 players, they kept their star starting pitcher.
Those accounts got overzealous when MLB Network insider Joe Morosi reported a late push from Boston to land Ryan. However, a source told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo that Boston was “not even close” to completing a trade.
In the aftermath of an unfortunate saga, The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reported more on why a deal didn’t reach the finish line.
McCaffrey confirmed that the Red Sox reached out to the Twins right before the deadline, but negotiations “fell apart” because Boston didn’t offer a major league outfielder or a package of top prospects that met Minnesota’s liking.
Talks reportedly included outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, MLB.com’s No. 88 prospect, but the rest of the proposal wasn’t enough for Minnesota to move an ace under team control through the 2027 season.
Ryan would have formed a formidable duo with Garrett Crochet atop Boston’s rotation. The 29-year-old also would have commanded a considerable haul while boasting a 2.82 ERA and 0.92 WHIP this season.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow addressed his trade efforts in a post-deadline media call, via NESN on X.
“We pursued a number of really impact opportunities,” Breslow said. “Obviously, not all of them work out, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying to be as aggressive as possible from an unwillingness to get uncomfortable. Ultimately, it takes two teams lining it up for those trades to line up.”
The Red Sox didn’t leave the deadline empty-handed, acquiring pitchers Dustin May and Steven Matz.
