Not Messi: Real Madrid star Vinicius names Cristiano Ronaldo and 3 Barcelona icons as key inspirations
Vinicius Junior has been one of world soccer’s brightest stars for years. He’s reached the top of the sport at the club level with Real Madrid, and now he’s opened up about the athletes who have served as inspirations. Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list, along with three Barcelona icons—though Lionel Messi is notably absent.
“My parents are my biggest inspiration,” Vini said in a recent interview with GQ. “They worked very hard to give me the opportunities I have today. Their dedication, love, and sacrifice are what push me to keep going every day. Everything I do is to make them proud.”
The 25-year-old winger then spoke about other athletes whose example he follows. “Cristiano Ronaldo also inspires me with his incredible work ethic and dedication; he never stops trying to be the best,” he said, referring to the superstar he shares a Real Madrid connection with.
Vini also mentioned an NBA icon known for his accomplishments both on and off the court. “LeBron James for the same reasons, but also for what he’s done for his community—showing that greatness goes beyond performance,” the Brazilian added.
Vinicius praises two Barcelona icons
In the same interview, Vinicius also spoke about legendary players from his home country whom he deeply admires. “Of course, Brazilian legends like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Neymar, who mean so much to the Brazilian people and to Brazilian soccer. They’ve shown the world the talent and joy we bring to the game,” he said.
All three players named by Vini were undisputed leaders of their national team during their peak years, but they also share an interesting connection: all of them played for Barcelona, Real Madrid’s biggest rival.
Ronaldo had the shortest stint with the Catalan side, playing there from 1996 to 1997 before shining later with Los Blancos. Ronaldinho and Ney, however, were central figures at Barcelona. Both formed unforgettable partnerships with Lionel Messi in their respective eras—duos that frequently caused problems for Real Madrid.
Vinicius sets high goals for the future
At just 25 years old, Vinicius Junior has already carved his name into soccer history, playing a crucial role in two UEFA Champions League titles for Real Madrid. But he’s not satisfied yet. “I’ve already achieved a lot, but my dreams are far from over,” he warned.
“I want to win more trophies with my club, and win the most important competitions with the national team,” Vini added. While he has collected nearly every major title at the club level, he still has unfinished business with Brazil: he has yet to win a trophy with the national team, despite playing in two Copa America tournaments and one World Cup.
Finally, Vinicius made it clear that his ambitions extend beyond the field. “I want to keep inspiring the next generation to believe in themselves,” he said. “My biggest dream is to leave a legacy that goes beyond soccer, especially through all the work I’m doing with my foundation to improve the education system in Brazil.”
