Premier League star heavily linked to MLS transfer in major summer signing
While Inter Miami and Major League Soccer continue working to extend Lionel Messi’s contract, big moves are happening across the Atlantic. Reports suggest U.S. soccer is now targeting a Premier League superstar, just weeks after a failed attempt to sign Antoine Griezmann, who renewed with Atlético Madrid.
Son Heung-Min is expected to receive formal offers to move to Los Angeles. LAFC recently lost Olivier Giroud and, after missing out on Griezmann, they’ve now set their sights on the Tottenham forward. Son, fresh off a UEFA Europa League title, will be playing in the Champions League next season. At 33 years old, the timing for a move to MLS seems increasingly realistic.
“LAFC has already submitted an initial proposal to Heung-Min Son to become the new face of their project. The decision now rests with Son, who will speak with Thomas Frank and clarify his future as soon as possible. Spurs will let him decide his next step,” reported Fabrizio Romano. The Los Angeles club hopes to bring Son in this summer, aiming for the second half of the 2025 MLS season. As Messi’s renewal continues to dominate headlines, the league remains active in attracting global stars.
While this wouldn’t be a direct replacement for Messi, it’s a signal of MLS’s long-term vision. The Athletic reports that January 2026 is being eyed as a possible window for LAFC to make a serious move for Son. That aligns with the opening of the winter transfer market and a potential Designated Player slot becoming available. After failing to land Griezmann, LAFC now dreams of bringing the South Korean captain to California.
Son, who currently captains Tottenham, is under contract until the summer of 2026. Even his new manager, Thomas Frank, acknowledged the uncertainty: “Situations like this are always tricky. Right now, I have a fully committed player who’s training well… But when someone’s been at a club for a long time, decisions always have to be made.”
