Shoulder Trouble Could Sideline Potential Red Sox Pitching Target
Kris Bubic’s name had quietly gained traction as a potential fit for the Boston Red Sox ahead of the trade deadline. But now, the Royals left-hander’s availability — and health — is uncertain.
Bubic exited his most recent start after just 2 ⅔ innings and admitted postgame that “physically, something’s not right,” as reported by MLB.com’s Anne Rogers. He also revealed he’s been dealing with shoulder tightness for “a good portion of the season,” putting a pause on any trade speculation until more clarity emerges.
The 27-year-old had been one of the more intriguing under-the-radar names linked to Boston in recent weeks thanks to strong performance metrics and a year and a half of team control.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan had included Bubic among several starters the Red Sox were reportedly keeping tabs on. He entered this week with a 2.38 ERA and 115 strikeouts over 113 ⅔ innings while commanding a five-pitch mix that leaned on location over velocity.
That profile, along with his $3 million salary and arbitration eligibility through 2026, had made him a potentially appealing mid-rotation option for Boston’s playoff push. But any such pursuit is now likely on hold.
It is unclear whether the Royals will move Bubic at all, even if the shoulder concern proves minor. Kansas City’s recent acquisition of Randal Grichuk signaled interest in contending, although Bubic may have been their most valuable trade chip. If the injury lingers, teams like Boston may be forced to pivot or wait and see if Bubic’s market reopens this offseason.
For now, what looked like a promising potential trade match appears firmly stuck in limbo.
