Report: Stones 4-0 Colchester Utd U21s
Colchester started the brighter of the two sides, and clipped the bar with a cross, but Maidstone established a three goal lead inside 37 minutes.
On 10 minutes, John Gilbert pulled the ball back and Deon Moore’s shot went in via a deflection. Gilbert was involved again for the second goal with 34 minutes gone. His free-kick was parried by Tom Smith only for the ball to fall straight to David Agbontohoma who didn’t miss from close range.
Just three minutes later, Gilbert got in on the scoring action. A cross from the right from a trialist was at a nice height and Gilbert showed good technique to power his header past Smith.
Maidstone finished the half strongly. Leo Hamblin got the ball in space and found Gilbert whose effort from just outside the box went wide of the left post. Then from a similar distance, Riley Court thumped a shot wide.
And with 45 minutes on the clock, the Stones went close to adding a fourth. Gilbert appeared to be fouled in midfield but he kept going and found trialist whose shot from a narrow angle hit both Smith and the right post.
Seven minutes after the break, Maidstone did score again. Gilbert’s corner came into a crowd of players and Leo Hamblin appeared to get a touch before Moore got his second of the afternoon to round off the scoring for the Stones.
