Keylor Navas reveals former Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos’ key role in Pumas UNAM move
Keylor Navas pulled off a sensational move to Pumas UNAM, becoming the latest former Real Madrid star to join Liga MX. Amid interest from other clubs, the veteran goalkeeper revealed the key role Monterrey’s Sergio Ramos played in influencing his decision.
After parting ways with Paris Saint-Germain, Navas returned to action in January with a six-month stint at Argentina’s Newell’s Old Boys. However, during his introductory press conference on Thursday, the Costa Rican goalkeeper opened up about the personal reasons behind his departure from South America.
“Now we can be close to our family, and that’s super important for us because we’ve spent many years away, and that really motivates us,” Navas admitted. Beyond the family aspect, former Real Madrid teammate Ramos also played a pivotal role in swaying him toward Liga MX.
“I also had conversations with Sergio (Ramos), he’s like a brother to me, and he told me about his experiences in Mexican football. Players like James (Rodriguez) have also come here and have a lot to offer their teams; Liga MX is growing a lot and is very good in many ways.”
According to ESPN, Navas’ contract with Newell’s was terminated for a fee of around $2.4 million. He has now signed a one-year deal with Pumas, with an option to extend it through 2027.
Keylor Navas sets high expectations with Pumas
Pumas last lifted a trophy in the Clausura 2011 final against Morelia. Since then, the university-backed club has endured a 14-year title drought. With the high-profile signings of Aaron Ramsey and Keylor Navas, the club’s leadership is aiming to finally break that streak—and the goalkeeper is fully on board with the mission.
“It’s a big club, and any player who has the opportunity to be here shouldn’t let it slip away; thank God we’re here today, and we’re very happy about it. We chose Pumas because we believed we could come to a club where we can compete for titles, and that’s important to me. I’m coming with the desire to give my very best,” said the Costa Rican goalkeeper.
