How Alex Cora Responded To Rafael Devers’ Position Change With Giants

Alex Cora isn’t in the mood to revisit things that don’t involve his current ballclub.

The Boston Red Sox manager was asked about San Francisco Giants slugger Rafael Devers receiving his first start at first base Tuesday night. Devers, who the Red Sox traded to the Giants in mid-June, reportedly stiff-armed a request to play first base in Boston.

“I don’t want to talk about the Giants,” Cora told reporters before the Red Sox faced the Phillies at Fenway Park on Tuesday, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.

Devers served as San Francisco’s designated hitter Wednesday, confirming it’s not a full-time position change. Devers hadn’t ever player first base before, spending the vast majority of time at third base before the 2025 campaign.

The three-time MLB All-Star has seen his production dip since moving to the Bay Area. Devers is hitting .227 with a 99 OPS+ in his first 110 at-bats in San Francisco, after he hit .272 with a 151 OPS+ in 73 games with Boston this season.

He did have a much-improved performance Tuesday, though. Devers went 2-for-5 with a run-scoring double against the Atlanta Braves. He told reporters after the game he preferred to play the field as it keeps him active and his mind from thinking strictly about his next at-bat.
