'Save this name': Man Utd now weighing up move to sign 23-year-old Belgian star - Journalist

Manchester United are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.

The Red Devils have primarily focused on bolstering their attack in the ongoing transfer window.

They have already signed Matheus Cunha alongside Diego Leon. Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo has also completed his medical and could be announced as the club’s third signing soon.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the Red Devils are likely to focus on a striker and a goalkeeper after securing the services of Mbeumo.

Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez has already been linked with United on many occasions, but Romano adds that United are also interested in Royal Antwerp sensation Senne Lammens.

The 23-year-old has been scouted by the Red Devils over the past few months. The club now have to decide internally on whether to recruit Martinez or a young profile in Lammens, who can develop behind Andre Onana next season.

He said: “Senne Lammens, save this name, playing for Antwerp, 23 years old. I’m told Manchester United have an interest in this player.

“He’s been scouted [and] monitored in the recent months; he’s a talented goalkeeper. Manchester United now have to decide internally what they want to do with the goalkeeper.

“Whether they want to bring a big, important goalkeeper, like Emi Martínez, or if they want to bring a young profile with the opportunity to grow behind Onana, to have his chances, to compete.

“Lammens is a name they are really considering at Manchester United.”

Lammens would be a fabulous signing for the Red Devils

Lammens has been on United’s radar over the last few months, and we have already covered an opinion on why the Red Devils should pursue a deal for the highly-rated Belgian.

The 23-year-old made his major breakthrough with Antwerp last season. He was exceptional with his reflexes, making 4.3 saves per league game with a success rate of 77 percent.

Lammens had an xGOT (goals prevented) of 15.57. He made some outstanding saves for Antwerp.

In comparison, Onana managed only 2.6 saves per outing with a success rate of 67 percent. The Cameroonian star had an xGOT of only 0.53 in the English top-flight.

Aside from his shot-stopping, Lammens also caught the eye with his distribution. He completed 26 passes per game with 48 touches. He also saved four out of eight penalties.

Lammens has the potential to become a world-class goalkeeper in the long run. In our view, he could start as an understudy to Onana before replacing him between the sticks.

Antwerp are ready to sell Lammens for £17 million. At that price, he would be a bargain signing. It makes sense to sign him over Martinez, who could be past his prime soon at 32.
