Newcastle United to challenge Tottenham in race to sign a Thomas Frank favourite

0 1

Tottenham Hotspur are still attempting to get a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White over the line, and now Newcastle United may steal a match on another one of Thomas Frank’s targets.

Over the last few days, several outlets have reported that Tottenham are pushing ahead with a move for Wissa, with Thomas Frank reportedly keen on reuniting with the centre-forward in North London.

It has been revealed that Brentford are desperate to hold onto Wissa, with the new Bees head coach Keith Andrews seeing the centre-forward as a key part of his set-up.

Over recent days, it has emerged that the Bees have asked Spurs to pay £50m for Wissa, even though the striker only has a year left in his contract.

Newcastle United could enter Wissa race after Hugo Ekitike disappointment

Brentford’s high asking price may not be Tottenham Hotspur’s only stumbling block, with a new report from GiveMeSport revealing that Newcastle could turn their attention to the 28-year-old.

The report says that the Magpies had identified Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike as their top target, but are ready to make a move for Wissa as a back-up option.

The outlet claims that there is some surprise at Brentford that Tottenham are yet to formalise their interest in the DR Congo international.

It is asserted that Spurs’ inaction may have opened the door for Newcastle as the Bees face an uphill task to retain the centre-forward’s services.

David Ornstein and others have also reinforced these claims. The journalist reported on Thursday that Newcastle are cooling their interest in Ekitike and exploring a move to sign Wissa instead.

No contact has been made yet, and no personal terms have been agreed, but Newcastle are expected to reach out to Brentford ‘soon’. Wissa’s availability and price may depend on Manchester United’s move for Bryan Mbeumo.

Tottenham may have an advantage in race for Yoane Wissa

Like Spurs, Newcastle can also offer the Brentford star Champions League football and a move to St James’ Park would be tempting for the player.

However, it was revealed by talkSPORT a few days ago that Wissa’s top preference is to join Tottenham due to Frank’s presence at the club.

The Lilywhites will be hoping that the Danish coach’s relationship with the former Lorient man would give them an advantage over other suitors.
