Red Sox Insider Makes Confident Prediction About Team’s Deadline Plans
It’s yet to be determined what deals the Red Sox will make ahead of the MLB trade deadline. But the moves Boston won’t make are easier to forecast, as expressed by one Red Sox insider.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo made a confident prediction and noted a few positions that Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow won’t be targeting before July 31.
“Breslow isn’t going to add an outfielder,” Cotillo wrote. “He’s not touching third base, shortstop or second. So any acquisition better be able to play first base.”

Cotillo’s sentiments shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
After all, the Red Sox have plenty of depth in the outfield grass with Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Masataka Yoshida, etc. The return of third baseman Alex Bregman, revival of shortstop Trevor Story and ability to mix and match with Marcelo Mayer, Ceddanne Rafaela and Romy Gonzalez at second gives Alex Cora options.
The platoon of Abraham Toro and Gonzalez at first base has yielded positive results during Boston’s 10-game win streak, too. But there’s no doubt the ballclub could stand to add at the corner infield spot.
Cotillo name-dropped Rays first baseman Yandy Díaz as someone that would be high on Boston’s wish list if Tampa Bay was to include him in trade talks. Díaz certainly isn’t the only first baseman Boston could target, however.
