Deion Sanders Calling for New Punishment in College Football

0 20

Deion Sanders certainly did things his way during his NFL and MLB careers, and that philosophy has extended to his coaching tenure at multiple schools.

Sanders essentially replaced his roster overnight at Colorado, and the results were clear in the second year of his stint. The Buffaloes were a hair away from the Big 12 championship - and the College Football Playoff - just two years after Sanders took over a one-win program.

Sanders has developed bonafide NFL talent, with several Buffaloes players drafted or picked up by teams this offseason. We'll see how year three goes for Sanders, but he's currently shifting his focus to how some current players are pushing the envelope in their own way.

During his time at Big 12 media days, Sanders said that many college football players have stopped wearing thigh and knee pads, and that their pants are often cut at the thigh.

“Let’s do something about the uniforms,” said the Pro Football Hall of Famer.

“We’ve got guys in biker shorts. That makes me sick because I’m a football guy — I played this game at a high level and I have so much respect for this game. How can we allow guys out there in biker shorts, no knee pads, no nothing, literally pants up under their thighs, and that’s cool?”

Officials currently have the ability to throw flags on players for uniform violations, but Sanders said that he wants to see fines.

“I think there should be a fine implemented for that stuff, and let’s have more respect for this tremendous game,” the head coach noted.

Sanders' stance on the matter aligns with some of his previous comments on the infrastructure of college football. He recently advocated for a salary cap in the sport, a move he believes would promote competitive balance at the top level.

Sanders also said that he'd like to see some pro rules adapted at the college level, including two feet in bounds for a catch and marking the ball at the spot of the foul for pass interference.

As Colorado prepares for its first season without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, it's clear that Deion is ready to take an even more professional approach.
