Tottenham’s Cristian Romero worries may not be over despite Atletico Madrid calling off pursuit
Real Madrid could make an offer for Cristian Romero over the coming days or weeks, with the La Liga giants allegedly willing to meet Tottenham’s asking price for the centre-back.
Over the last few days, Tottenham’s chances of hanging onto their vice-captain appear to have been boosted after it emerged that Atletico Madrid have called off their pursuit of Cristian Romero.
Various sources have claimed that Atletico became tired of waiting after Spurs informed them Romero is not for sale, with Diego Simeone’s side said to be looking at other alternatives.
However, just as Tottenham Hotspur fans were growing in optimism that the centre-back would stay, there has been a huge transfer bombshell about the defender.
Real Madrid are willing to meet Tottenham’s asking price for Cristian Romero
Fichajes say that after their humiliating loss at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals of the Club World Cup, Real Madrid have begun searching for major reinforcements to their side, and they have set their sights on the Tottenham man.
Los Blancos are keen to strengthen their backline ahead of Xabi Alonso’s first season in charge and Romero has now emerged as a ‘serious option’, given the leadership and consistency he has shown for club and country over the last few years.
The outlet points out that the deal may be difficult as Spurs do not intend to let the 27-year-old leave on the cheap. Tottenham are expected to demand €80m (£70m) for Romero but this is a figure that Madrid are ‘willing to pay’.
In fact, the outlet adds that the feeling at the North London club is that an offer could soon arrive for the Argentine from the Santiago Bernabeu.
Would Spurs turn down a £70m offer for Romero?
It has been widely reported over recent weeks that Spurs are ready to make Romero their highest earner to keep him at the club.
However, it is unclear if the centre-back will agree to put pen to paper on a new deal, with some sources claiming that Romero wants to leave Tottenham for a new challenge.
If the former Juventus man refuses to sign a new deal, Daniel Levy and co might be tempted to accept a £70m offer for him, especially given the huge amounts they have spent on new signings this summer.
