“That game made my mind up”: Talented defender reveals turning point in United move
Talented centre-back Ayden Heaven has revealed the key moment that convinced him to join Manchester United from Arsenal.
Heaven joined United in the January transfer window after the club agreed to pay Arsenal a compensation package of £1.5 million.
The English defender was offered a new contract by the North London club, with six months left on his deal, but he rejected their offer.
His contractual situation with the Gunners alerted United, Barcelona, Chelsea, Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Frankfurt made a strong push for him, inviting him to watch a game in their stadium.
However, United won him over when he was invited to watch a Europa League game against Rangers at Old Trafford
He told The Athletic: “That was the game that made my mind up, really, because I’ve never been to a louder stadium than that. It was really noisy and the staff in the directors’ box were really kind.”
Manager Ruben Amorim’s three-man defence also influenced his decision to join the Red Devils.
“I saw myself playing in that team while I was watching. I felt like three at the back would suit me,” he added.
Heaven has made six competitive appearances for the Mancunian giants, playing as a left centre-back.
He suffered an injury on his full Premier League debut against Arsenal in March. He returned to action in the United’s penultimate league game at Chelsea.
He was on the score-sheet as the Manchester outfit beat the Hong Kong national team 3-1 during the post-season tour.
The teenage defender faces stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up from Lisandro Martinez, who is expected to return from injury soon, and Luke Shaw.
He was among the first wave of players to arrive at Carrington for pre-season preparation on Monday.
