Meet Unlikely Red Sox Member Up For All-Star Consideration
The 2025 All-Star Rosters were announced on Sunday, though they’re not entirely filled out yet. Some players, such as Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman, may not play in the game due to injuries. Their spots will be filled by those on the bubble, depending on the position.
That’s not all, though, for the second year in a row, two ball boys and girls will be selected to attend the game. Four ball people were nominated, and two will be sent to Atlanta. One of this year’s nominees is Red Sox ball attendant Jacque Harrington.
Harrington was nominated for a play she made in April, but until last week, she hadn’t even seriously considered the All-Star game as a possibility.
“As a joke, I was talking to one of my coworkers at Fenway and said, ‘We have to make a highlight reel play so we can go to the All-Star game,” Harrington said. “I sort of knew that they did it, but I didn’t know they were doing it again or that I would even be considered.”
Harrington, a New Hampshire native and lifelong Boston fan, is in her third year as a Red Sox ball girl. She’s more than qualified for the position, having played catcher at Providence College for four years.
Moving from catcher to the first base line has been somewhat of an adjustment, but she’s managed just fine.
“I use my middle infielder’s glove, which is much smaller. I’d probably make a lot more plays if I had my catcher’s mitt, but I’d feel weird sitting there with it.”
It’s not the first time Harrington has gotten recognition for a defensive play. She said that Kyle Hudson, the umpires, and players from the dugout have acknowledged her fielding skills before. She’s also unfazed by booing fans.
“The fans will boo me if I miss. There’s been a couple times where I’ve got boos,” Harrington told me. “But I’m like, alright, you come out here if it’s so easy.”
Away from Fenway, she turned heads when she made a bare-handed catch behind the plate and had the instincts to fire to first for a double play.
Voting for the All-Star Ball crew ends Tuesday, July 8, at 11:59 pm. You can vote here.
