How Alex Cora Reacted To Red Sox’s All-Star Game Selections
The Boston Red Sox enjoyed an eventful Sunday. After completing a sweep over the Washington Nationals to climb over .500, they learned that three of their players are going to the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
Garrett Crochet, Aroldis Chapman and Alex Bregman made the American League roster. Fellow MLB players selected the trio, who each joined Boston last offseason.
Alex Cora celebrated the prestigious All-Star nods, per MLB.com’s Byron Kerr.
“It is great,” Cora said. “Obviously, the fans vote and I think they got it right. But for your peers to select you, that means a lot. Chapman, Garrett and Alex — Alex in a short period of time — they have impacted this organization on the field and off the field. They are really good at what they do. What they’ve done in the clubhouse, the way they’ve prepared, the way they go about their business is amazing and I am very proud of them.”
Crochet was a clear-cut choice. The 26-year-old leads the majors in strikeouts (151) and ties Logan Webb with an MLB-high 120 1/3 innings pitched after earning his ninth victory on Sunday.
The Red Sox shared a video of Cora informing the team of their All-Star selections. He made a cross gesture and pointed to the sky when mentioning Crochet’s innings tally, already approaching last year’s career-high 146.
“He’s the first pitcher in Red Sox history with 140-plus strikeouts and an ERA below 2.40 in the first 18 games,” Cora noted. “Beast, you’re an All-Star.”
Chapman received his eighth career All-Star nod and first since 2021. The closer boasts the lowest walk rate (7.4%) of his 16-season career and hasn’t permitted an earned run since May 27.
Both pitchers were safe bets to make the AL squad, but Bregman’s inclusion may have caught fans off guard. A quadriceps injury has sidelined the newly acquired third baseman since May 23.
Bregman played like an All-Star when healthy, batting .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs and a 2.4 WAR that still ranks sixth at the hot corner despite his lengthy absence.
Aiming to return to Boston as soon as this week, Bregman may have a chance to participate in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 15.
“We will see what happens,” Cora said. “I don’t want to get ahead of myself. First things first, we need him here for us. We will take care of that first and (then) decide what we do for the All-Star Game.”
