EN, FR, PR: Zambia U20 women seal place in semifinals at Region 5 Games

Zambia sealed their place in the semifinals of the women’s Under-20 football tournament at the Region 5 Games in Windhoek, Namibia on Monday, while their men’s side also took a step towards the last-4.

There were an impressive 17 goals scored across four games in the men’s and women’s football tournament as teams vie for the gold medal, and also to be crowned Under-20 champions for 2025 in the COSAFA region.

Zambia’s men hit the front in their 3-0 win over Eswatini in Group B as Gabriel Phiri put his side in front as he fired into the roof of the net from 15 yards on 18 minutes.

Billy Daka finished a fine team move as he steered the ball in at the near post after Zambia brilliantly created the space in the box with intricate passing.

The rampant Young Chipolopolo were 3-0 up just past the half-hour mark when Kelvin Chipelu dispossessed an Eswatini defender outside the box and raced into the area before finishing low past the goalkeeper.

South Africa were also early leaders in their 3-0 victory over Botswana, after Selwyn Stevens profited excellent work by Neo Bohloko set him up for a tap-in.

Bokamoso Mokokosi made it 2-0 with another close-range tap-in as he profited from a mazy run from Emile Witbooi that bamboozled the Botswana defence.

Omphemetse Sekgoto added a third just before the hour-mark as he rifled in from a tight angle after beating his defender on the right wing.

Group A will be concluded in the men’s competition on Tuesday, with three teams still in the running for two places. Malawi (4 points) top the pool on goals scored from Angola (4), followed by Namibia (3) and already eliminated Zimbabwe (0).

Angola take on Zimbabwe at the UNAM Stadium at 15h00 CAT (13h00 GMT), knowing victory will seal a semifinal place.

But they may even qualify with a defeat depending on what happened in the clash between Namibia and Malawi that is played at the Hage Geingob Stadium at the same time.

If Zimbabwe and Malawi both win, then they go through, while Namibia must beat Malawi as if they finish level on points with Angola, they will finish behind them by virtue of head-to-head.

There were goals galore in the women’s Under-20 competition on Monday.

South Africa took the lead in their 3-0 victory over Eswatini as Busisiwe Mokoena turned the ball home from close range after Lindelwa Mabuza’s free-kick was only parried by the goalkeeper.

Mabuza then doubled the advantage when her shot from just outside the box nestled in the back of the net.

And it was 3-0 just before halftime when Zizipho Mhlahlo was sent through on goal with a superb pass and she provided a cool finish.

Zambia claimed an emphatic 8-0 victory over Angola in the other Group B game on the day, scoring six of those in the first half.

Victoria Mbali, Bwalya Chileshe and Saliya Mwanza all scored two goals each, while there were further strikes from Zangose Zulu and Eunice Bwalya.

The victory takes Zambia into the semifinals as they ensured they cannot finish outside the top two in the pool.

Group A in the women’s competition will come to a conclusion on Tuesday when the final round of matches are played.

Botswana sit on top of the pool with six points from their two games and have already secured qualification to the semifinals.

They take on hosts Namibia at 12h00 CAT (10h00 GMT) at the Hage Geingob Stadium, where a point will be enough for them to seal top spot, and for Namibia to advance in second place.

If Namibia win then they will take top spot in the pool with Botswana in second place.

At the same time, Malawi take on already eliminated Zimbabwe at the UNAM Stadium. Malawi must hope for a Namibia defeat and then to beat Zimbabwe to sneak into second place.

All Region 5 Games fixtures will be streamed LIVE on COSAFA’s YouTube channel. Matches will also be streamed LIVE around the world on FIFA+, except in the countries of the competing teams.

As per the rights agreement with Region 5 Games organisers, matches will be available to view in full on FIFA+ in those countries 30 minutes after the final whistle.
