Re: Octopus Energy

One of the things they allow you to do is to buy units at different rates throughout the day.

For example, my day rate is 25p (ish) per kWh, whereas my overnight rate is 7p per kWh. Therefore, everything that can be done overnight (washing, dishwashing, tumbling, etc.) can be done at a fraction of the daytime cost.

There are even more sophisticated tariffs that change the unit price every 30 minutes, depending upon the wholesale price. If you're a sophisticated user, you can hugely reduce your bill (all while using the same amount of units).

Add some solar panels into the equation (which I have) and I get paid for exporting excess daytime energy at 15p per kWh, whilst consuming overnight energy at 7p per kWh. It means I make quite a profit on my electricity generation/consumption, especially at this time of year.

The possibilities are endless.

Having said all that, I know they're not for everyone, and I'm certainly not here to preach to anyone.
