Stats suggest Thomas Frank could fix Tottenham set-piece woes after replacing Ange Postecoglou
Tottenham’s new manager, Thomas Frank, is expected to bring noticeable changes to the North London club, and one of those areas could be set-pieces – a glaring weakness under his predecessor.
Thomas Frank will be looking to improve on Tottenham Hotspur’s 17th-place finish last season, as he has been tasked with the responsibility of leading the club into a new era.
Spurs, while they often get stick for doing their transfer business late, were swift in their efforts to sign the former Brentford coach this summer, following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou.
With the new manager in and in ample time, Frank now has enough time, including a full pre-season, to work with his new squad ahead of the 25/26 season.
Thomas Frank could fix Tottenham’s set-piece struggles
During his time at Brentford, Thomas Frank’s team were very much known for their ability to mix things up, as the 51-year-old never stuck with a particular system.
His team scored loads of goals last term, 66, the fifth most in the division and two more than Postecoglou’s side.
While scoring two more goals than Ange is impressive, there is one key area of Frank’s Brentford team’s goal-scoring that could be of help to Spurs, and that is set-pieces – an aspect of Tottenham’s game that needs improvement.
Last season, Brentford were one of the best sides when it came to goals from set plays, as Frank’s former side managed 13 in the 2024/25 campaign, with only four sides – Arsenal (14), Crystal Palace, Aston Villa (both 16) and Nottingham Forest (17) – scoring more top-flight set-piece goals.
Tottenham, on the other hand, managed just ten goals from set-plays last term in the Premier League, three fewer than Brentford.
Spurs’ use of set-pieces at some point in the previous season left many Tottenham fans frustrated, as goals from dead-ball situations were few and far between.
Why Spurs fans should expect improvement at both ends
Defensively, on the other hand, Frank’s side were also very astute when defending against set-pieces, as his side conceded just two Premier League goals from set plays all season, which was three fewer than any other team in the division.
Meanwhile, Tottenham conceded an outstanding 13 Premier League set-piece goals, including one in the first north London derby against Arsenal, an alarming 11 more set-piece goals than Frank’s Brentford.
With the Dane and a few members of his backroom staff, including Joe Newton (First Team Coach Analyst), making a move to North London, Spurs would be expecting these numbers to reduce significantly next campaign when Frank and his team begin working with the Tottenham players.
However, it is worth noting that Spurs were not able to poach Brentford’s set-piece coach, Keith Andrews. But with five members of Frank’s staff making the switch with him, it is expected that they all find a way to improve on the Lilywhites’ set plays, as Postecoglou struggled to rectify this problem during his time at the helm of Tottenham.
